We are excited to introduce our newest Viva Babe, Cara, whose advocacy for individuals with Down Syndrome is inspiring. Cara was in for a heartwarming surprise during what she believed was a regular meeting with Representative Yancey. As the Viva Babe certificate was being read, Cara’s friend and nominator, Kathleen, joined via Zoom to share her nomination. The room was filled with joy and emotion.
Cara’s journey is deeply personal. She credits her son, Cole, who has Down Syndrome and autism, with helping her find a voice she didn’t know she had. Inspired by her own experiences and the encouragement of fellow advocates like Kathleen, Cara has devoted herself to championing the needs of individuals with special needs.
Cara finds joy in caring for her rescue animals and connecting with other mothers who share similar experiences. Five years ago, she founded a Facebook group for moms across Mississippi with children who have Down Syndrome. What started as a small community has grown to over 350 members who support one another, from celebrating birthdays to navigating healthcare.
Her favorite quote by Martin Luther King Jr. reflects her commitment to doing what’s right: “Never, never be afraid to do what’s right, especially if the well-being of a person or animal is at stake. Society’s punishments are small compared to the wounds we inflict on our soul when we look the other way.”
Cara’s advocacy extends beyond her immediate circle. She co-founded the Mississippi Down Syndrome Advocacy Coalition to empower other parents to engage in state-level advocacy. Seeing others find their voice in this work brings her immense fulfillment.
