“Discover your gift, develop your gift, and then give your gift away

Congratulations, Viva Babe Valerie!

On the last day of school, Valerie thought the impromptu kindergarten assembly might be for an ice cream social. But it turned out to be something even sweeter. Principal Purdy handed the mic to Hailey, her friend and colleague, who shared a heartfelt surprise by reading the nomination she submitted. Valerie was overjoyed to be recognized with the Consuela Viva Babe Award! The applause was lively, and happy tears were shed for this ridiculously awesome woman.

Valerie is a true powerhouse: a loving mother of four, a remarkably talented kindergarten teacher, an inspiring cross-country and track coach, and a graduate student. She was named the 2024 South Dakota Region 3 Teacher of the Year and was a finalist for the Presidential Award in Math and Science Teaching. “She’s remarkable,” Hailey said. “She gives so much to her students, her family, and her community—always with love and never expecting anything in return.”

In her classroom, Valerie finds joy in: a child writing their name for the first time, learning a new word, or simply their excitement about everything. “You never know what someone is battling and what a smile can mean to them,” Valerie shared.

Outside of school, her joy continues through family time, cheering on her students, and her kids. She’s deeply grateful for her husband, who’s also a coach and always supports her goals, along with their amazing village, including her parents and in-laws, who help make it all possible.

Her life motto is a quote from college coach Don Meyer: “Discover your gift, develop your gift, and then give your gift away.” She lives by this every day through her dedication to teaching, coaching, and mentoring.

Valerie, thank you for inspiring the next generation and for bringing light to every room you enter. You truly are a Viva Babe!
